Ocular Genetics and Precision Ophthalmology

Genetic research is improving the understanding of inherited eye diseases and creating opportunities for more individualized approaches to ophthalmic care. This session will explore inherited retinal disorders, genetic corneal conditions, hereditary optic neuropathies, and other genetically influenced ophthalmic diseases. Discussions will cover genetic testing, molecular diagnosis, disease-risk assessment, genetic counselling, and emerging gene-based therapeutic approaches. The potential role of precision medicine in selecting treatments and predicting disease progression will also be examined. Experts will consider the clinical opportunities and challenges associated with genetic testing, including accessibility, ethical considerations, interpretation of results, and long-term follow-up. The session aims to encourage collaboration between ophthalmologists, geneticists, molecular researchers, and healthcare professionals.
